From Reactive IT to Proactive Performance Management

Welch’s—the global brand known for juices, jams, and jellies—transitioned from a reactive approach to infrastructure performance management to a more proactive, data-driven model, reducing planning time, licensing requirements, and overall workload.

Before Galileo: A Reactive Approach

At Welch’s, IT teams were frequently challenged to answer questions related to hardware, software, and utilization efficiency. A centralized IT function supporting manufacturing, supply, and finance was responsible for managing databases, storage, and applications.

Prior to adopting Galileo, the organization relied on a mix of AIX/Linux and Oracle tools but lacked full visibility across the environment. Mukesh Sharma—Senior Manager of IT, Database, and ERP Infrastructure—oversees all mission-critical infrastructure. In his words, their former approach was “very reactive.”

Administrators responded to individual performance complaints using their own approaches.

“Our environment runs very lean, with no dedicated administrators to watch storage or systems. Downtime here slows our entire business, potentially including manufacturing and shipping. We cannot afford any slowdowns, which is why partnering with Galileo made so much sense. They let us see not only what has happened, but also where, when, and why. Better yet, they allow us to prepare for what may happen in the future. That preventive component is vital.”

A More Proactive Approach with Deeper Performance Insight

With Galileo in place, Welch’s IT team gained the ability to analyze infrastructure performance more holistically. A small group of users—typically three to five, including power users—could examine the environment for bottlenecks and quickly pinpoint the moment issues occurred.

As noted:

“CPU and paging performance have proven to be important features—along with allocation and utilization. We can look back at CPU usage, paging, disk service time, and storage performance. We can quickly transfer ownership of infrastructure performance to the correct people.”

The use of centralized dashboards provided detailed, real-time visibility into assets across the enterprise, helping teams investigate issues with precision, align accountability, and make faster, more informed decisions.

Results: Cost Savings and Improved Efficiency

Using Galileo, Welch’s improved its approach to capacity planning—eliminating the need for time-intensive external analysis that previously took weeks.

With better visibility and shared performance data, the team was able to:

  • Right-size hardware, storage, and CPU allocation
  • Streamline software licensing
  • Standardize how performance data was analyzed and shared
  • Reduce reliance on higher-cost infrastructure

These improvements supported more efficient operations and helped position the organization for future cloud adoption, with a projected 20% workload reduction over time.

As summarized:

“Seeing what happens before and after changes allows us to better utilize resources and maximize efficiency. We can provide detailed justification for business IT spending. Galileo helped us to move toward cost-effective processes and has quickly paid for itself. In the end, we make better decisions, spend less, and feel good about it. Galileo saves dollars while delivering value. I think the IT Intelligence Dashboards will improve how we make decisions across our IT enterprise. Using Galileo, we have already dramatically reduced our decision-making times, and these dashboards act like a crystal ball across our IT environment.”

Lasting Impact

By shifting from reactive troubleshooting to proactive performance management, Welch’s significantly reduced decision-making time and improved overall operational efficiency.

Galileo provided the visibility needed to move faster, reduce costs, and support smarter infrastructure decisions—laying the groundwork for a more scalable and efficient IT environment.
